2 of NKYVC's finest
defenders nationally recognized! Nicole
Staverman 18-1 & Leslie Schellhaas 17-1 named Defensive
Dandies by
PrepVolleyball!
First Team Honor: Nicole Staverman, Sr., Notre Dame (Covington
KY) – A
three-year starter at outside hitter, Staverman had 274 kills for
the Pandas
in 2007 en route to First Team All State status. One of the last
cuts to the top 100 Senior Aces, Staverman is an athletic, feisty
defender committed to Ohio University. She is very competitive,
moves well reads attackers like she was born doing it. Said one
rival club coach: “I had the privilege to coach against her
and rest assured one of my strategies when we play her team is: "DON'T
LET HER TOUCH THE BALL!"
Third Team Honor: Leslie Schellhaas, Soph.,
Notre Dame Academy (Covington KY) – Called
the best libero in a club known for producing a ton of them, Schellhaas
is unique in that she is not just a defensive player, she also
is a critical component of her team’s offensive system by
anchoring the serve-receive. She plays six rotations in the middle
of the court and passes 80 percent of the balls with unparalleled
accuracy. “What is most fun to watch is that she is everywhere
the ball is, making the impossible plays and frustrating the big
attackers by ripping them off when they think they have a devastating
kill,” said NKYVC coaching director Kathy Kleinhuizen. “Leslie's
personality is contagious, her work ethic is extraordinary and
she is a coach’s dream.
